Indeed 3 down, 62 to go!

And they could not look better. The crew came onto set yesterday at 5PM, we began filming around 7PM and we shot through the night (since we were shooting night scenes at a bar) til our Director, Katy, called the final “Cut!” at almost 6AM this morning. It was a fantastic night, full of energy, laughs and many people taking naps in the corner.

The best part is, we’re all up and ready to do it again today – hopefully by 6AM tomorrow morning, the headline will read “6 down, 59 to go” (well actually 5-and-a-half down and 59-and-a-half to go – since we’re actually shooting two-and-a-half scenes today)!

Press Releases and Variety

There was a small piece in Variety yesterday, trailing that TBS have signed up to broadcast the second series of lovebites

Filmed in Canada, “Lovebites” kicks off Oct. 22 as a twice-a-week microseries on TBS, playing every Monday and Thursday nights at 11:15 and midnight. Leading into and out of each TBS play of “Lovebites” will be a rerun episode of “Sex and the City.”

Here’s the original Press Release – lovebites returns to production for its second season. I love how they turn “Breaking away from her parents, experiencing life on her own and seeking that first job promotion causes plenty of stress and excitement, as Callie looks to make her mark in the world and, oh yeah…find the man of her dreams. ” into “moved away from her parents, works at a frustrating job and is seeking a husband.” because of course, a man of your dreams is always a husband ;-)

“Clink, Clink”

And just like that, everyone gathered into the production offices on Friday night and clinked glasses as we drank and geared up to go home, for the last time til production begins. We begin filming lovebites - season two this Monday and are scheduled to go straight through for five weeks — shooting three episodes a day — 15 episodes a week, with a total of 65 episodes.

I’ll keep you all posted with what’s happening on set!

Planning the PR

One area we are focusing on now is PR for the show and getting appropriate material for the press. A key element is behind the scenes stuff, B-Roll footage of shooting and the people involved.

So far we have footage from the script readings, which we have to get digitised and edited before we can put any up here. The next step involves finding a crew to be up on set in Toronto for a couple of days to shoot interviews and all that stuff – the equivalent of the extras on the DVD. That will go to an Electronic Press Kit, internal promotional material and blog material.

Their Off

And just like that, our week of rehearsals is over and the actors/actresses and Director are off to shoot “lovebites – season two”!

We had an incredibly productive week in LA, reading and rereading each and every of the 65 episodes. We began the week simply hearing the scripts with the actors sitting around a small table but by the end of the week they were using wads of paper as props and running around the room as if it was the busy city street it will look like on screen.

While the Director will spend this upcoming week scouting locations and working with the actors/actresses, we will stay here in LA and work on rewrites (in the hopes of tweaking and making the scripts as funny as possible). I will then leave LA on Sunday and join everyone on set as we begin shooting “lovebites – season two” at 5PM Monday the 30th (that is correct, our first week are night shoots – which means we’ll film from 5PM to 5AM the each day)

Getting Scripts Approved

One thing that has to be gone through when making a show such as lovebites is script approvals. It’s not just the writers and show producers who get to input into the script but other parties as well. Each of the 65 scripts has to be read, commented on and approved by the agency here, the Sunsilk team, the TV station team and other partners that bring things to the show,. Each of these groups can pass comment or suggest changes – and it is up to the writers to try and bring it all together in a way that keeps everyone happy. Not a job I fancy ;-) Now we are two weeks out from shooting most of this back and forth has been completed but there can still be the odd change.

Day 1 Baby

It’s so funny because today, at our Table Read (the first time the writers, directors and producers, along with anyone else associated with the project, got to hear these actresses act out the script) one of the actresses randomly blurted out: “Day 1 baby! Here’s to Day 1”. And while everyone around the table, and everyone looking at the people sitting around the table, clapped and screamed: “Day 1 baby! Here’s to Day 1”, all I could think about was, “Day 1? Really? Try more like Week 17!”

Because, yes, for the actresses, today was indeed their first day, but…

For the writers, we’ve spent the last 17 weeks dreaming up these characters, this world and then writing the 65 scripts that will make up this season of lovebites

For production, they’ve spent the past many months scouting locations and working to secure the best possible look for this season of lovebites

For casting, they spent the past many-many weeks looking to find the perfect cast for this season of lovebites

And now, for the cast themselves, they’ll spend the next 7 weeks making this into the very best season yet of lovebites!

Welcome

Welcome to lovebites – or at least the blog associated with it. Hopefully you’ll have seen the show last year on TV or online, our award winning micro-series following one twenty-five year old girl’s quarter life crisis. We’re back this year, again produced by 10 time Emmy nominee Paul Reiser, Peter Isackson and Leslie Grief. We’re back this year in a way that is a little different, not least of which is this blog.

Here, we are going to be following the production of the series, taking a look at the writing, the casting and preparation, the shooting and the post-production work. You’ll get bits from the writers, the people behind the scenes, the sponsors, the actors (if I can convince them, that is). Come take a look behind the scenes as we slide back the curtain on what it takes to make TV like lovebites.
